Bridge,Elevator, Dining Table

My concpet of power associated with each client included the thought of how social media was infuencing the way big TNC's such as Coco-cola are marketing and working. My mash up broadcast this concept and also boradcast on how i felt power was more about how you can influence society, both facebook and coca cola hold enormous power in terms of influence over society but in  comparsion to each other my beleif was facebook held the greater power due to its ability to control to a point the though process of individuals through theri social medium.

BRIDGE

My bridge was serperated into two bridges one for coca cola and one for Faceboo, the need to sperate came from the idea that each corporation was in it self a seperate entity for us as individuals coca cola is when u lay it down "food" and facebook is "communication" . The only way both these corporations could be connected to one another was through the meeting place.

The seperation of the bridges shows how both coporations are differnt and the meeting space below is where each corporation can meet, the differnce is bridge height is intentionally done to show the differnce in power bettween each corporation, the blue brige (facebook) is obviously the one with the higher influence so i put that bridge higer up to symbolically represent it looking over coca cola and the meeting palce.

The differnce in power is shown clearly in this image, facebook is  higer up and coca cola is lower down , however both companied are looking down at the meeting space representing that both of them have influence over society.

Entrance into the facebook bridge

This shows how it would look like to walk through the bridge, the cage like environment represents how an indivdual is trapped inside the bridge much like how we are trapped in the powers of facebook and coca cola and although it looks like we are free to roam we are confined in the space or in their influence.

From the coca cola head quaters to the connecting bridge, the image shows how the facebook corporation is higher above looking over it.

 SPACES/HEAD QUATERS

The coca cola head quaters is a large circle type cage to represent the coca cola can, again the space is like a cage to represent the big brother type power coca cola has, the coca cola head quaters is smaller than facebook to represent the differnce in the corporations.

Facebook space is linear and square i wanted to broadcast how facebook has this power over us that is in many ways evil as we are trapped in it hold, again the prision like structure is represented in this structure as it is a motiff through the bridge concept.

ELEVATOR

Coca cola elevator.

View from inside the coca cola elevator, where in the distance the facebook elevator can be seen. I used the rotational texture inside the elevator as the elevator animattion is rotating around.

 MEETING PLACE/ TABLE

This image shows celarly the power both facebook and coca cola hold over us, the meeting place on the valley floor allows us to look above to see the bridges and how they are looking over us. the dining table is just a collaboration of the two headquater spaces to represent that in this meeting place both are on the smae level and both are influenced by society.

This experiment broadcasts mainly how both corporations hold power  over us and how they trap us "society". I also wanted to convey that even within the corporations there is a level of power inequality and even within them their is a difference in the amount of influence each corporation hold over us.

Draft environment/ Failed sketchup model

My initial sketch up model where i spent ages doing it didnt import into my levels folder, realising there was too much component and trafic in my sketchup model i had to re do the bridge from scratch hence changing my whole bridge design.

My Valley

For my valley inspiration I choose my namesake the Narmada River located in central India. This river as the name suggests is what i am named after and religious significance in Hindu culture.

To discuss about my monument and its environment I first need to refer to my Electroliquid Aggregation concept which is

"Utilizing the dynamics of light to create dramatic monuments that integrate and dominate the landscape"

Through this concept I created I environment that relies heavily on the dynamics of light to create a monument that  dominates its environment whilst integrating with it. My Crysis environment is very simple this was done in order to focus on the monument. The idea behind this monument was to create a unique discovery in the forest type environment and when the monument was discovered it could be discussed and thought over by the architecture, architectural computing and engineering students. The monument takes inspiration from the Stoneenge and its purpose, as the stone henge on only one day of the year lets light pass through a certain point in its structure.

My monument utilities light heavily, at different times of the day as it casts shadows and reflections on itself creating a heightened sense of drama that relates to my Electroliquid Aggregation concept. The meeting point for my monument is around it and underneath it where the shadows are cast this meeting place becomes very spiritual as the shadows form geometric shapes of the monument on the terrain this cn insipirae the student whilst exchanging ideas taking the monument a step above.

The monument  cannot be walked over but just looked at and pondered over like a piece of art in the middle of a isolated land form. This ideology relates to the two architectures Santiago Calatrava and Louis Kahn, as their architectural spaces can be in many ways be considered as works of art.

The screen shot above refers to my electroliquid aggregation concept perfectly as it is showing how the dynamics of light are creating drama on the monument, the shadows on the terrain cast by the monument are in a unique shape establishing the drama of of the monument as there is a clear juxtaposition between the suns rays and the dark shadows.

The screen shot above broadcasts firstly Calatrava's design philosophy of defying conventions as the monument here looks like its suspended above the land with invisible ropes, it also takes on board Kahn's concept of his structures being a monument. Overall though again the concept of light is shown as the shadows casts forms a reflection on the terrain that monumentalises the structure.

The screen shot above included the hud which was purposely done in order to show what it would look like when the students gather around the monument. The light which is casting the shadows conflicts with him as he is in between the light and the shadow, this broadcasts the sense of drama light has created when it has interacted with the monument. The textures are also on the bottom of the blocks in order for the students to have a good view of them.

Electroliquid Aggregation

"Utilizing the dynamics of light to create dramatic monuments that integrate and dominate the landscape"

My Electroliquid concept integrates Calatrava's concept of, "Create monuments that integrate with and dominate the landscape" and Kahn's concept of"Compelling strong simple spaces with drama through the dynamics of light". I choose to merge these two concepts as they are interchangeable with each architect as  each contain elements that relate to the design philosophy Khan and Calatrava.

 Two initial  Concepts

1. Create monuments that integrate with and dominate the landscape

Calatrava creates structures with the mentality of it being something extraordinary and a focal point in the environment so in a sense he tries to monumentalise his structures to be the focal point of the landscape. Whilst trying to dominate the landscape with his structure he also harmonies its effect by integrating his structures with the landscape through his designs that take inspiration from natures patterns and features.

2. Compelling strong simple spaces with drama through the dynamics of light.

Louis Khan uses very geometric shapes to create simple spaces in his structures yet his structures seem to emanate a sense of drama and khan does this through using the dynamics of light, that cause reflections and shadows throughout his structures heightening the drama whilst maintaining the structural simplicity.

Getting to know Crysis

In order to become familiar with  Crysis sandbox and the play up tool in Google sketch up my first wk agenda was to play around with these tools. Crysis initially seemed difficult as understanding and manipulating the terrain dynamics was confusing but as I continued to play around with Crysis it became bit easier to manipulate with.

Extra Draft Models Just for Kicks :)

I created these models whilst i was trying to get a feel for Sketchup they dont go towards EXP 1 but they reflect how much ive progressed in 4 wks in using Sketchup and in terms of architecture how much ive progressed in creativity, design and my understanding of architecture the main purpose of this course. :)

Animate IT!

My animation below focuses primarly on the major theme in my model design and stair concepts which is program and movement. The video focuses on showing off the architecture whilst taking the viewer through an interactive journey through the structure as if they were there at the gallery themseleves.

Final Model

My final model below plays with many different elements of geometry and materiality, Glass, simple shapes and columns are prominent in my final model as i was aiming for a open and light construction. I have three sets of stairs instead of two sets to enable movement in my model to be made with a specific structure. The sets of stairs connect through movement the underground work-space, gallery and above ground work-space effectively so a person moving through the model can experience all three spaces.

Their is a clear datum in my model but this datum is challenged as the model is not separated by it but rather it is used as a design element. The above ground and below ground are connected through the stair and also through the use of columns which run from above ground to below ground creating in sense one single space instead of three separate spaces.

The choice of glass  in my material selection is crucial as it plays a major part in allowing the structure to be light and inviting. The glass also acts a method of connection between the three spaces as it enables a continuous flow and movement to be made.

Each stair set is very different in terms of design and materiality but they are connected in their purpose. The stair that goes from below ground to above ground is a long linear set of stainless steel stairs that is very industrial the open glass space above allows a person to view down below to the stairs allowing the staircase to act as a focus and essential design point, in the below ground work space.

The second set of stairs near the underground staircase is a spiral wooden staircase that flows from the underground one acting as a continuous structure. The spiral stairs adds some contrast to the structure but its maintains to remain apart of the structure as a whole.

The third set of stairs goes from the back of the above ground work space into the gallery area these glass stairs acts as an extension of the above ground workspace but also provides a stage for the artwork to be seen from a alternate point of view. This set was inspired by the TKTS staircase in Duffy Square New York. I was inspired by the idea of TKTS being a stage to witness the world around i took this concept and tried to recreate the idea in my design.

The structure although simple connects through movement and design the underground work space, gallery and the above ground work-space, the stairs arre essential in doing this but material choice also plays a major part.

2 Draft models

The first draft model was the one i went with when developing the final model, it is very different, bare and more complex than my final model but by creating this draft model i allowed myself to experiment and finally create a piece i was happy with. The sectional image i took it from is very different from the draft but in terms of major design elements it is similar.

The second draft model below was initially the first sketch-up model i had created in this course this model enabled me to explore sketch-up and the concepts of how 2D shapes are converted into a 3D design. I decided not to go with this model as i felt it didn't work with the concept of the datum we were working with.
